CALAIS 2008. The end of a hazardous three-month journey from Iraq is – quite literally – in sight for Bilial, a 17-year old Kurdish boy. When an attempt to smuggle him on board a ferry fails, he decides that the only option left to him is to swim the Channel to England. Thus begins a close ‘father and son’ friendship with an embittered French swimming instructor. Welcome avoids cliché and is a very honest, affecting drama, superbly played by the two leads, which topped the South-West Viewing session in April.
