TOKYO, the present. Daigo is a young cello player who unexpectedly finds himself out of a job. Responding to an advertisement headed ‘Departures’ - working as a travel agent must surely have good prospects – he finds that the job is, in fact, for an assistant undertaker. Unhappy at first, Daigo’s growing empathy with the rituals and traditions of the nokanshi is not shared by his family and friends. Warm, meditative and touching; gently witty rather than mawkish, Departures is an exquisite piece of work.
