Director: Debra Granik with Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Kevin Breznahan, Sheryl Lee
SO, YOU’RE just 17-years old, you’re caring for a younger brother and sister because your mother cannot, and you are soon to be evicted because your absent father has used the family home as a bail bond. What do you do? Well, in Ree’s case, little matter that her home wouldn’t look out of place in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, she sets out to track down the son-of-a-bitch. Oscar-nominated Lawrence gives such a mesmerising, assured performance Ree’s fight to safeguard her family easily becomes ours, too. For many (Empire gave it 5 stars), this is as good as American indie cinema gets.
