Director: Kathryn Bigelow. With Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce,
IRAQ, 2004. Staff Sergeant James (Renner, excellent) is the newest member of a bomb disposal team midway through its latest tour of duty. Since James is an unorthodox leader who is not averse to taking risks, the tensions both within and without are about to increase to breaking point…. The Hurt Locker is a 5 star, ensemble triumph of acting, cinematography, editing and sound design. In the final instance, however, the real triumph is Bigelow’s. In a career during which she has assaulted the male-dominated bastions of genre film-making, this is her masterpiece and the Oscar for best director (a first for a woman) was richly deserved.
