Agora

Spain, 2009, 127m, colr, 12A.

Director: Alejandro Amenabar. With Rachel Weisz, Max Minghella, Oscar Isaac

ALEXANDRA, EGYPT, THE FOURTH CENTURY AD. Hypatia – from that period, the only female natural philosopher known to historians – teaches at the Library, is politically outspoken and about to arouse further controversy by demonstrating that the Earth revolves around the sun. However, the city is also a hotbed of pagans, Jews and the new evangelical Christians led by the brutal Bishop Cyril. Thus, it is unlikely that the social order and its repositories of knowledge will remain undisturbed. Fourth century did we say? Agora is a thoughtful, intelligent epic from the director of The Others and The Sea Inside.
