The Time That Remains

Fr/Bel/ It/UAE/UK, 2009, 105m, 15, subtitled

Director-writer: Elia Suleiman. With Menashe Noy, Elia Suleiman, Saleh Bakri

SET IN AND AROUND Nazareth, this is the most beautiful, poignant coda to the director’s very personal trilogy that he started in 2002 with Divine Intervention. All have been concerned with what it is like to be an Arab citizen in modern-day Israel; Remains has the strongest storyline and historical perspective, focussing as it does on key events in 1948, 1970 and 1976 and how they affected his family. Idiosyncratic, yet echoing both Tati and Keaton, this is inventive, powerful filmmaking and a very interesting foil to Lebanon.
