Potiche

Fr/Bel, 2010, 103m, colr, 15, s/t

Director: Francois Ozon. With Catherine Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini

ABOUT THE TIME Brian Rix and stage farces such as No Sex Please…. were playing to full houses in England, our Gallic neighbours were being entertained by the likes of Potiche (‘Trophy Wife’). This new film version, set in 1977, is a delightful comedy. Suzanne (Deneuve) is married to the overbearing director of an umbrella factory. When striking workers kidnap him, things start to get very interesting – particularly when the odd mistress, communist MPs, feminism and politics are added to the mix. Ozon is the ideal director for such a frothy farce – every gesture, reaction and witty line is honed to perfection - and the cast is clearly having a ball.
