Director: Anthony Fabian. With Sophie Okonedo, Sam Neill, Alice Krige.

TRANSVAAL, 1965. Unaware of any black ancestry until the birth of their daughter reveals it, Abraham (Neill) and Sannie Lang (Krige) have always insisted Sandra is ‘white’ by descent. When, aged ten, she joins her brother at boarding school, is reclassified as ‘coloured’ and expelled, the scene is set for a titanic legal struggle. Cleverly exposing the flawed ideals of a patriarchal society – and family – as well as those of apartheid, this is a sensitive and moving drama with fine performances all round.
