Director: Martin Provost. With Yolande Moreau, Ulrich Tukur, Anne Bennent.
SENLIS near Paris, 1914. Séraphine is a drudge treated, at best, with benign indifference by her employers. A devout Catholic, she is inspired by visions to paint, with whatever materials she can cobble together, long into the night. Encouraged in her endeavours by a German art dealer who is impressed by her work, fame and fortune beckon, finally, after years of toil and sacrifice. This could well be a poisoned chalice, however, as Séraphine is ill-equipped to deal with such elevated circumstances. Moreau is magnificent in the title role, in a beautifully photographed biopic that has enjoyed enormous critical success.
